On June 16th 1976, young people stood against injustice and inequality and paid the highest price for they believed in.
41 years later – we’re honouring you!
What the youth of 1976 struggled against, were those of education enslavement, inequality, poverty and economic deprivation – which still remain issues that our youth grapple with.
Youth Day is not only about the past, but about the future in which the success of our democracy will depend on.
You, young entrepreneur are the future of our nation!
Your imagination, ideas and energy have the potential and capacity to act on social change, economic expansion and innovation.
You owe it to the sacrifices made by the 1976 generation for this democracy to do something about the pervasive structure of South Africa.
This Youth Day ought to remind us that our economy matters – our country matters.
According to StatSA’s mid-year population estimate, the population is largely made up of young people; those who are below the age of 35 years constitute about 66% of the total population. With over 54 million South Africans, 18.5% are between the ages 10-19; and 24% are aged 15-24. This presents a powerful resource for the country, provided that that the youth are supported and able to become active members of society and the economy.
The National Development Plan states that, having a relatively young population can be advantageous; provided the majority of working age individuals is gainfully employed… the challenge is to convert it into a demographic dividend. This can only be possible if the number of working-age individuals can be employed in productive activities, i.e. youth-owned entrepreneurship.
An active youth-owned entrepreneurship sector creates opportunities resulting in higher volumes of production, employment, and most importantly eliminates poverty and reduces inequality. In addition to being a lever for increasing economic growth, youth-owned enterprises have the power to eventually grow into larger firms that are able to contribute to increased employment opportunities as they evolve through the business cycle.
